Tomalis

The next day Barron slept in late again and I decided not to bother him. I was at a loss for words anyway. Brain cancer. Liver disease. Hepatitis C. It was just not fair.

I had breakfast in the kitchen for a change. I didn’t always like the dining room and I wasn’t trying to deal with Zetta and Zora until I had to. I envisioned the two of them sitting in there wearing silk robes and thinking they were the most special women on earth. They were both in for a rude awakening. Zetta and I had managed to avoid each other since the argument about Jonah and Anastasia. Barron and I had stayed out late, taking our time coming back from Baltimore, and I opted for one of the guest rooms instead of our bedroom.

Marguerite came in from the dining room with some empty plates and saucers. She said, “Good morning, Mr. Wolfe. I didn’t realize you were in here.”

“Good morning, Marguerite. I’m just going to eat in here this morning.”

“Would you like for me to prepare something special for you?”

“What did you already prepare?” I asked as I poured myself another cup of coffee and sat back down at the breakfast bar.

“Waffles and bacon.”

“That sounds good. I’m easy to please.”

Marguerite smiled at me. “You’ve always been easy to please.”

“Thanks for the compliment. How’s your kid?”

“Oh, Fernando is great. He’s doing very well in school.”

“Good.” I paused for a second, just staring at her. She always had such a pleasant disposition; even though I knew life had not been easy on her. “Marguerite, I meant what I said before. Fernando is welcome here anytime. Feel free to have him visit as often and for as long as you like.”

She sighed as she placed the dishes in the sink. “I appreciate that, Mr. Wolfe, but Mrs. Wolfe has made it clear that she doesn’t think that would be professional.”

I smirked. “Let’s get something straight. Zetta is not your employer; I am. Zetta pays no bills around here; I do. You bring Fernando around and leave Zetta to me. Trust me, when it comes down to it, she doesn’t have a leg to stand on.” Just a back to lie on and legs to spread, I wanted to add but didn’t.

Marguerite laughed and she had a beautiful smile. “I’ll get your plate for you right away, Mr. Wolfe.”

“Please call me Tomalis, Marguerite. If I’m going to call you by your first name, after all these years don’t insult me by calling me by my last. We are on the same level. Don’t let anyone make you think otherwise.”

“Thank you, Tomalis.”

“No thanks necessary. Now how about that waffle?”

After Marguerite had fixed my plate, I asked her to join me. She stepped back in surprise.

“I can’t do that, Tomalis. I’m part of your staff.”

“Didn’t I just say less than three minutes ago that we are on the same level.” I pointed to the stool beside me. “Please, fix a plate and join me.
